ABOUT MATCHA

HEALTH BENEFITS, FOCUS, MOOD ENHACING AND CALMING PROPERTIES

All you need to know about this 800-year-old wellness-gem.

What is matcha?

Matcha — 抹茶 — is essentially finely milled green tea powder known to be more nutrient than both tea and coffee. But to us, matcha is much more than that.

— Calming

We love the calming effect of matcha and specialise in carrying authentic matcha directly from Japan, because, to us, matcha is more than just a better alternative to coffee. Drinking matcha is a special moment where your mind and body finally feels at peace. That moment when you take a sip, breathe out and go “aaahhh

— Mood Enhancer

Introducing to you, L-theanine, our body's happiness chemical.

A unique amino-acid known to help improve your focus, mood and makes you feel relaxed. L-theanine is a true wellness gem because it puts you in a calm & meditative state and facilitates better sleep. Enjoying a nice cup matcha (hot or cold) does wonders because matcha contains more L-theanine than any other tea. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression. L-theanine elevates levels of serotonin. So, the natural feel-good chemical in matcha is important for the brain for us to feel happier every day.

Sometimes life really can be that easy.

— Stable Energy Source

The combination of the small amount of caffeine and other beneficial compounds, such as L-theanine, provides a sustained source of energy, so you stay focused for longer (like the Japanese Monks would when drinking matcha during their meditation sessions that would last up to 8 hours). This energy energy boost without the jitters is one of the reasons why so many people have switched from coffee to matcha.

— Antioxidant Rich

Matcha is a rich source of antioxidants. In fact, it contains more than 10 times the amount of antioxidants you get from drinking a regular cup of green tea. Antioxidants are known to help remove bad molecules from the body, and decrease oxidative stress. Matcha also contains catechins: an antioxidants also found in açai, pomegranates, and blueberries.

How do you prepare matcha?

Matcha can be prepared as tea, following the iconic tradition of Japanese tea ceremonies, or, and is also delicious as a matcha latte or beverage as well as an ingredient baked goods and treats. See our recipes for inspiration and how to prepare the perfect cup of matcha.

Does matcha contain caffeine?

Matcha contains a gentle amount of caffeine. This gives you an energy boost without the caffeine crashes, digestive problems, and mood swings commonly associated with drinking coffee.

What is the difference between good and bad matcha?

Matcha, similar to wine, comes in a variety of qualities and tastes. The quality and taste of matcha are shaped by factors such as the tea leaf grade, harvest methods, shading time during cultivation and farm topography. Here are a few helpful tips to determine the quality of matcha:

Colour: Linked to its chlorophyll content, a more vibrant green hue corresponds to a richer and less bitter tasting matcha with higher chlorophyl levels from longer shading rates. A matcha with a duller green colour has likely been under prolonged exposure to the sun during cultivation resulting in a more bitter flavour from being "fried from the sun".

Aroma: High quality matcha is aromatic. Our matcha has an ooika fragrance (ooika meaning shaded). An enticing aroma that cannot be suitably described as it is best experienced. Imagine fresh top notes reminiscent of white chocolate, connoting its naturally sweet taste:

Feel: Finely milled matcha that has been ground into a delicate powder will feel very smooth. Inferior quality Matcha, on the other hand, will feel rough, with a texture like sand.

Flavour: High grade matcha should not taste astringent or bitter, real, ceremonial grade matcha is a buttery-sweet brew on its own.
